"Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace."

The world’s most hauntingly atmospheric cemetery, Highgate Cemetery, occupies a spectacular hillside site in Highgate, north London. Opened in 1839, it quickly became a fashionable locale for the wealthy and death-obsessed Victorians; who romanticised and positively enjoyed the rituals and artefacts surrounding its occurrence. A wealth of Gothic tombs, mausoleums, crypts, archways, gates, and other stone architecture (along with cunningly placed creepers, vines, shrubbery, and spooky trees) create a fantastically Dickensian scene that seduces billions of tourists each year.
